CN Wooden Baggage Car HO Scale

SKU : Y0466

Modeled in Grey Resin small pieces left on the supports This Baggage Car is Great from the 1930s to the mid to late 50s.

In 1937, CN purchased a variety of wooden baggage cars from car ARYX, a reporting mark for American Realty Co., a subsidiary of the International Paper Co., acting as a sort of railcar dealer.  These cars were purchased to add to CN’s stock of box-baggage cars, becoming part of the railway’s express fleet.  The cars were used widely across CN’s system in box-baggage service, and even in fruit service in Southern Ontario into the Niagara region.

There were a large number of cars purchased under this scheme and they came in a variety of sizes and varying door configuration with origins that are lost to time.  This kit represents a group of 13 cars, numbered 8915 to 8927, purchased by CN in 1937 from ARYX, originally built by Pullman in 1923.  The instructions of for this kit allow you to build CN 8921, originally ARYX 3308, renumbered April 1938.

The 13 pullman built cars feature a steel underframe, LN brakes, 4-foot 5 inch wide doors with 3 windows and full width steps below the door and one grab iron above the corner step.  A series of excellent left side detail shots of 8921 by Jim Parker were used as the basis for designing this car.  Other details were filled in by a right side photo of 8918 and photos of other similar cars

While this car represents a particular series of cars, they can be used to represent a variety of CN wooden baggage car with steel underframes and 6 inch-wide doors.  Within the class itself, variations exist in hand grab numbers, and other cars feature stirrup style steps at the outside ends of the baggage doors.  Parts are provided for these options.  This kit also includes details for auxillary air tanks and battery boxes for dedicated baggage service which would not be present in box-baggage (express) service, however, they can be added to suit prototypes desired by the modeller.
