Flexi-Van was a New York Central Railroad service that began in the mid-1950s, offering a unique form of intermodal transport by allowing a specially designed truck-like container (van) to be quickly transferred to a rotating turntable on a flat rail car. This system enabled door-to-door delivery for businesses, combining the flexibility of trucking with the efficiency of rail by eliminating the need to unload and transfer cargo. The process involved detaching the van from its undercarriage (bogey), sliding it onto a hydraulic-powered turntable, and locking it into position on the flat car for long-distance rail transport.
